This workshop will give you insight into a long term, successful relationship between an artist and her gallery.
Jessica Backhaus, one of the most important voices in contemporary photography today, will talk about her work and her inspirations and guide you through the process of creating new work.
Robert Morat of Robert Morat Gallery in Berlin has been representing Jessica Backhaus for almost 15 years. He will share his experiences in the international art market and answer any question you could possibly have: How to approach a gallery, how to prepare a portfolio, what to expect and which mistakes to avoid.
Together they will discuss with you the process of editing, sequencing, image selection and presentation first hand, working with your material and the images you create during the workshop.

Jessica Backhaus – Robert Morat
Jessica Backhaus was born in Cuxhaven, Germany in 1970 and grew up in an artistic family. At the age of sixteen, she moved to Paris, where she later studied from 1989-1992 Photography and Visual Communications. Here she met Gisèle Freund in 1992, who became her mentor. In 1995 her passion for photography drew her to New York, where she assisted photographers, pursued her own projects and lived until 2009. Jessica Backhaus is regarded as one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary photography in Germany today. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and her photographs are in many prominent art collections. She is represented by numerus galleries in Germany, Italy, Portugal and the United States. To date, she has nine publications to her name; Cut Outs, Far away, A trilogy, Six degrees of freedom, Once, still and forever etc. All books are published by Kehrer Verlag, except Far away but close that was published by Another Place Press. Since 2009 Jessica Backhaus lives and works again in Berlin. In 2012 FOAM Fotografiemuseum, Amsterdam produced a short documentary Wonder Jessica Backhaus, by Willem Aerts. Robert Morat, born 1971 in Freiburg in Br. 1991-1996 studies German Literature, Journalism and Art History at the Hamburg University. 1997 – 2004 works in publishing as an editor for different magazines, newspapers and TV stations in Hamburg, Munich and New York. 2004 opens the Robert Morat Gallery in Hamburg, focussing on new positions in contemporary photography. 2007 first art fair participation at Photo Miami. After that, the gallery becomes a regular exhibitor at international art fairs such as Paris Photo, Unseen Amsterdam, Photo London and the New York Photography Show. 2009 becomes a member in AIPAD, the Association of International Photography Art Dealers in New York. 2010 – 2015 serves as a director on the board of AIPAD, New York. 2010 opens a project space in Berlin. 2015 the gallery moves to Berlin and closes it’s Hamburg space. 2018 appointment to the DGPh, the German Photographic Society
