An Unromantic Take on Documentary Photography
Mathieu Asselin, an award-winning artist in the documentary space, designed this thought-provoking workshop for those eager to use photography to shape impactful narratives in today’s socio-environmental context.
The workshop will consider both the potential and limitations of the medium and emphasize the importance of personal vision and an individual approach. Participants will be encouraged to take a critical stance that challenges established norms of storytelling, especially in social and environmental projects, and that goes beyond merely documenting the consequences in order to examine underlying power dynamics.
There will be discussions about “truth” and “objectivity,” as well as an argument in favor of a photographer using their subjective point of view as a narrative device. You’ll explore the role of aesthetics and its problems, as well as its potential to solve complex representational challenges.
Participants can bring their own project or explore new ideas in the beautiful but complex landscape of Santorini.

Mathieu Asselin
Mathieu Asselin (FR/VEN, ̊1973) lives in Arles, France. He began his career working on film productions in Caracas, Venezuela, but shaped his photography practice in the United States. He obtain his Masters’s degree from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP, Arles) in 2017. His work mainly consists of long-term investigative documentary projects, such as his latest book ‘Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation, which received international acclaim, winning the Kassel FotoBook Festival Dummy Award in 2016, the Aperture Foundation First Book Award in 2017, and has been shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize in 2018. Les Rencontre d’Arles in France, Photographer’s Gallery in London, Fotomuseum Antwerp in Belgium, the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and Hasselblad Foundation in Gothenburg are amongst recent venues where his work has been exhibited. Since 2018 he become a member of the editorial committee at Disclose, the first NGO dedicated to investigative journalism in France. Actually, he is a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts KASK. Gent, Belgium, and co-founder of double-dummy studio, a platform that creates a space for producing and showcasing critical reflections on documentary photography. He is represented by The Ravestijn Gallery, Netherlands.
