An Unromantic Take on Documentary Photography
Mathieu Asselin, an award-winning artist in the documentary space, designed this thought-provoking workshop for those eager to use photography to shape impactful narratives in today’s socio-environmental context.
The workshop will consider both the potential and limitations of the medium and emphasize the importance of personal vision and an individual approach. Participants will be encouraged to take a critical stance that challenges established norms of storytelling, especially in social and environmental projects, and that goes beyond merely documenting the consequences in order to examine underlying power dynamics.
There will be discussions about “truth” and “objectivity,” as well as an argument in favor of a photographer using their subjective point of view as a narrative device. You’ll explore the role of aesthetics and its problems, as well as its potential to solve complex representational challenges.
Participants can bring their own project or explore new ideas in the beautiful but complex landscape of Santorini.
