Distillation: From a Publisher and Artist’s Perspective
Many photographers dream of seeing their work published in book form, but how does one take the first step?
Olivia Arthur and Philipp Ebeling are the founders of London-based Fishbar Publications, a space for photography in East London that publishes photography books and zines and mounts exhibitions. They are also accomplished artists in their own right: Olivia is a Magnum photographer and the author of two limited-edition books, Jeddah Diary and Stranger. Philipp is an editorial and commercial photographer whose work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He is also the author of the book Land Without Past. Both are convinced that photography finds its best expression in book form, and for this workshop, they will be sharing their firsthand insights into the process.
“A Publisher’s Perspective” is aimed at photographers who have a cohesive body of work or ongoing projects that they would like to advance and shape. Philipp and Olivia will guide students to develop their ideas, clarify their message through rigorous editing, and interrogate the work for its strengths and weaknesses. Participants will produce something physical that represents their ideas, such as a cohesive book dummy.
In order to apply for a placement in the workshop, please send us a zip file with:
1) a short cv, 2) up to 10 images (jpg format, maximum size 1024p, 72dpi) and 3) a statement.
