Art Residency

THE PROGRAM

The Palm Tree Art Residency Program is designed for artists and scholars seeking an ideal environment for research and creation. We aspire to foster opportunities for multidisciplinary dialogue, while encouraging collaboration and cultural exchange by bringing together individuals from diverse fields of practice.

There are three residency periods: one in July, one in August, and one in early September. We accept up 3 artists per period. The program spans two weeks and is open to local and international participants.

There are no specific thematic requirements. You are welcome to develop an ongoing project or pursue a new one.

Alongside their artistic practice, residents are encouraged to explore the island’s architecture and landscapes, engage with Greek traditions and the local community, and work closely with natural materials.

WHERE YOU’LL STAY – FEES

The Palm Tree Residence is a historic property  in Santorini, originally built in the 1800s by the Dacoronia family, who were known for exporting vinsanto wine to Malta. The estate includes three houses—the Captain’s House (now known as the Workshops Space), the Palm Tree Cave House, and the Palm Tree Cave Studio —along with two private chapels and a small vineyard.

The Palm Tree Cave House comprises two cave houses that share a kitchen. It can host up to 2 artists. We will do our best to make a good match between co-residents.

The Palm Tree Studio is ideal for one artist.

Payment Terms

Your place in the residency is secured upon payment of a 50% deposit within 10 days of acceptance. The remaining balance is due one month prior to arrival.
All payments are made via bank transfer.

Travel, ground transportation, and other personal expenses are not included.

 

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • Transportation upon arrival and departure within Santorini
  • Bed linens, towels, and basic essentials, access to washing machine
  • Seasonal organic products from our garden
  • Access to the Workshops Space at Palm Tree Workshops (upon request)
  • Access to a digital workspace (LC monitor, OPTOMA projector with screen, and HP Colour LaserJet Pro M255dw printer). Please note: Production costs are not included. Materials such as ink and paper must be provided or ordered by the artist.
  • Opportunity to host an artist talk, pop-up presentation, or similar event (if desired)
  • Nature tours and community introductions (if desired)

 

 

How to Apply

The application process is free and open to all.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Early applications are encouraged.

Selected artists will be notified within one week after the application deadline.

To apply, please submit the following in one single PDF file, 10 MB max, using this file-name structure: SURNAME_NAME.pdf.

  • Artist statement, 500 words maximum (your vision, what motivates your practice, the reason you are applying for this residency)
  • Short cv, bio, and info (full name, address, email, and phone)
  • A portfolio. You may present as many images as you wish. Captions and short descriptions can be included at your discretion.
  • Links to video/films if relevant to your application. Please do not attach videos.
  • Your preferred residency period.

Cancellation & refund policy

In the event that The Palm Tree Art Residency cancels the program, participants will receive a full refund.

There are no refunds if you choose to cancel within two months of your selected residency dates.

Stays shorter than two weeks are possible, but the full fee applies.

The Palm Tree Art Residency is not responsible for participants who are unable to attend due to personal reasons, force majeure (natural disasters, airline strikes, etc.), or other unforeseen circumstances. Participants are strongly advised to obtain travel insurance.

Each case, however, will be considered individually and treated fairly.

 

 

FAQs

What is expected from the artist during the residency?

There is no requirement to produce artwork during your stay. However, after your residency period we would like you to write a short report of your experience, with images if applicable. We may also occasionally wish to interview you. If it suits your work, you may also participate in our summer exhibition or other exhibition opportunities we might arrange.

Are there art supply stores nearby?

There are no art supply stores in Akrotiri, where the residency is located. We recommend bringing what you need. We do have a printer, but you will need to bring your own paper and ink. In nearby Fira, there is a small bookstore that sells drawing and photography supplies. If you bring your own equipment, please keep in mind that you might need an adapter for our European outlets.

Should I rent a car?

You should rent a car or a motorcycle if you plan on doing much of your work outside of Akrotiri. We can advise on nearby rental agencies. Public bus transportation on Santorini Island is efficient and affordable. Fira (or Thira) is Santorini’s main city, and the central bus station is located there. Buses run to/from Fira to popular destinations including Perissa (Black Beach), Kamari Beach, Akrotiri (Red Beach), and Oia, as well as Athenios port and the airport. All journeys are under an hour.

Is Santorini handicap accessible?

Unfortunately, Santorini is not handicap accessible, there are many steps and stairs throughout the island.

Do you offer any funding?

We are not able to offer funding. We would be happy to provide a letter of acceptance for artists pursuing financial assistance from an outside source.

House guidelines for residency

We have put together a few simple guidelines to help ensure a smooth, respectful, and enjoyable stay for everyone.

Built in 1865 and recently renovated with care for its traditional Aegean character, the residence is a special space that benefits from a little extra attention.

  • Smoking indoors and the use of illegal substances are not permitted
  • Please maintain your room and workspace with care
  • Kindly inform us of any damage or malfunction
  • The surfaces of the house (walls and floors) should remain untouched
  • Kitchen waste should be disposed of daily
  • The use of hazardous materials (nitro, aerosols, petrol, etc.) is not allowed
  • Quiet hours are observed after 22:00

Participant responsibilities & rights

Participants agree to be photographed or filmed during the residency for archival and promotional purposes.

The Palm Tree Art Residency is not responsible for participants’ safety outside the residency premises, nor for the loss or theft of personal belongings. Every reasonable effort will be made to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Participants are responsible for their insurance and medical coverage during the residency.
